Javier Murcia
Javier Murcia was born in the Canary Islands, Spain, in 1981. His artistic journey began at the University of La Laguna, Spain, between 2002 and 2005, where he delved into various artistic mediums, including drawing, painting, and foundry work. Among these disciplines, he found a deep fascination for sculpting, drawing inspiration from contemporary and figurative art.
In 2008, Javier embarked on a transformative adventure, venturing to Copenhagen, Denmark, for a year and a half. During this period, he collaborated with a team on a monumental sculpture project led by Christian Lemmerz. The challenges posed by the scale and complexity of this endeavour were significant, but they also bestowed invaluable experiences and connections with established artists, immersing Javier in the vibrant art community of his new surroundings.
In 2010, he returned to his hometown to work on another substantial commission, devoting two more years to this project.
However, the winds of change led Javier to yet another life-changing move in early 2013, this time to New Zealand, where he discovered a fresh creative haven for his artistic endeavours. It was here that he embarked on a captivating artistic journey with his series of artworks titled “Oxidations” in 2015. This project held him in thrall until 2018, resulting in an impressive collection of over 300 pieces. Building upon the essence of Oxidations, he then ventured into the creation of his subsequent acclaimed series, “Eidos,” which earned him recognition and accolades, including the prestigious QT Hotel Wellington contest in 2019 and international exhibitions.
Even amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, Javier remained resolute and launched a deeply meaningful personal project—an educational platform named “Sculpture Studio by Javier Murcia.” This undertaking reflects his dedication to sharing knowledge and his passion for sculpting, enriching the artistic community and fostering creativity during uncertain times.
